Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei artfully captures the massive and shocking breadth of the global migration crisis in this epic film.

Ai Wei Wei’s work has often commented on social injustices set upon the human race, shining a light on his own country China, where he was arrested and in detention for ‘alleged economic crimes’ for nearly three months with charges for tax evasion. Ai’s supporters widely view his detention as retaliation for his vocal criticism of the Chinese government. Until 2015 Ai remained under heavy surveillance and restricted movement, but continued to criticize through his work. Ai Wei Wei has been living in Berlin since 2015.

Filmed over the span of a year, Human Flow was shot by 25 film crews in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, France, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Palestine, Serbia, Switzerland, Syria, Thailand, and Turkey. Making extensive use of drone photography’s ability to show vast scales, this film provides insights into the plight of today’s 65 million forcibly displaced individuals – the highest number ever – forced out of their homes by war, famine and climate change on long, treacherous journeys in search of new lives.
