In his final leading role before his death in 2017, the great Harry Dean Stanton (Cool Hand Luke; Paris Texas) shines as ‘Lucky’, a cranky old 90-year-old curmudgeon staring down mortality and his past.

Living alone in a small Arizona desert town, Lucky spends his days watching game shows, doing crosswords and visiting the local bar and diner with his friends. He has out-lived and out-smoked many of his contemporaries, but finds there are still opportunities for self discovery, even enlightenment, at his advantage age – though he is still of course facing an inevitable decline. What follows is an elegiac, sensitive meditation, full of pleasing deadpan humour, on the spiritual aspects of growing old.

Actor John Carroll Lynch’s debut directorial feature is Stanton’s show from beginning to end, but also features an impressive supporting cast from Tom Skerrit, ron Livingston, Ed Begley jr and, enjoyably, director David Lynch in a rare acting role as a bar buddy with (naturally) a pet Tortoise.

Touching and powerful, Lucky is a fitting tribute to Stanton and an iconic and brilliant career spanning six decades.
